Founder and CEO, Aerogen Ltd,
The European Entrepreneur of Year 2015/16, John has been a founder of several technology based start-ups in Ireland UK and USA and has a track record of bringing innovative and disruptive businesses and products to market. As both a business and technology innovator he is accredited with many commercialised US and International patents ranging from Robotics through to Life Support Ventilators.
In 2000 John merged his medical device company Cerus Medical with a US Bio-pharma company Aerogen Inc which he helped to bring public on NASDAQ later that year. The company was subsequently acquired by San Carlos, CA based Nektar Therapeutics. In 2007 John lead a Leveraged MBO of his Strategic Business Unit from Nektar Therapeutics, becoming CEO of this company Aerogen Ltd.
Aerogen is today established as the world leader in Acute Care Aerosol Drug Delivery Systems, its innovative products having treated over 30 million critical care patients in 80 countries around the world. Having won many prestigious national and international awards for its products and services, in 2025 Aerogen was presented with its 11th straight Zenith Award from the American Association of Respiratory Care, the longest consecutive award winning streak in the associations 80 year history.
John has over 40 years experience in technology industries holding executive positions in Operations, R&D, Sales and General Management in the Aerospace, Automation and for the last 25 years the Medical and Pharmaceutics sectors. A Chartered Engineer he holds qualifications in Computer Technology (Robotics), Mechanical and Production Engineering and an MBA from Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, England.
John is an Adjunct Lecturer at NUIG where was awarded an honorary PhD in 2016 for his contribution to the Irish Med-Tech Industry. He lectures in his favourite subjects of marketing innovation & strategy and the role of the technical and social entrepreneur.
John is current Chairperson of Connacht Rugby and is a former Board Irish MedTech Association and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology (IRCSET).
He is an active supporter of many local and international charities and in 2024 he travelled to Gedo, Somalia, one of the poorest regions in the world, to open an 80 bed regional hospital funded by the Power Family and administered by Trocaire the Irish NGO.
